WARUM DIESE ROUTE

Warum die Route Napoléon?

The Route Napoléon follows the path Napoleon took in 1815 after his return from Elba. From Golfe-Juan it runs via Grasse, Castellane, Sisteron and Gap to Grenoble.

Over around 324 kilometres, it links Mediterranean landscapes with the winding roads of the French Pre-Alps. History, mountain panoramas and a varied course make it one of France's legendary routes.

    Grasse

The perfume capital of the world. After that, the winding part begins: the road climbs in wide loops up into the Pre-Alps.

    Castellane & Gorges du Verdon

The chapel of Notre-Dame du Roc sits on a rock above the town. From here, it's not far to the Verdon Gorge – a worthwhile detour.

    Citadel of Sisteron

The fortress on the rock guards the Durance Valley like a gateway to Provence. Down in the town there are plenty of cafés for a break.

    Prairie de la Rencontre

Near Laffrey in 1815, Napoleon confronted the king's soldiers and won them over. An equestrian statue commemorates the event.

GUT ZU WISSEN

Praktische Infos.

Road & surface

The N85 is well maintained and mostly wide, with long, flowing bends. Between Grasse and Castellane it gets especially twisty.

At weekends there are lots of motorcycles on the road – and correspondingly many speed checks.

Tolls & fees

The Route Napoléon is toll-free. Only the motorways for getting there and back charge tolls.

Fuel & breaks

There are fuel stations in all larger towns such as Grasse, Castellane, Digne-les-Bains, Sisteron and Gap. Between Grasse and Castellane they are few and far between.

Tips for the tour

From Castellane, a detour into the Gorges du Verdon is worth it – one of Europe's largest canyons, with spectacular roads along its rim.

In midsummer, start early on the coast to avoid the heat.

Two days are enough for the route, three with the Verdon detour.
