WARUM DIESE ROUTE

Warum die Timmelsjoch / Passo Rombo?

The Timmelsjoch links the Passeier Valley in South Tyrol with the Ötztal in Tyrol. The high alpine road is only open in summer – for the rest of the year it lies under snow.

In just 35 kilometres you get everything that makes an alpine pass: tight hairpins and tunnels in the south, wide sweeping bends in the north and, at 2,474 metres, a panorama over both countries.

    Hairpins of the south ramp

From Moos, the road climbs steeply in tight hairpins and through short tunnels. Narrow, winding, spectacular – the wildest part of the route.

Praktische Infos.

Road & surface

The south ramp on the Italian side is narrow, winding and runs through several short tunnels – lights on. The north side in Austria is wider and faster.

In season, the road is open daily from 7 am to 8 pm.

Tolls & fees

A toll is charged on the Austrian side; the toll station is near Hochgurgl. Motorcycles according to the operator's price list: €18 one way, €25 return. Current prices at timmelsjoch.com.

Fuel & breaks

There's no fuel station on the pass road itself. Fill up in St. Leonhard or Moos in Passeier, or in Sölden.

You can stop for food at the Top Mountain Crosspoint in Hochgurgl and in the villages in the valley.

Tips for the tour

Set off early: from midday the south ramp gets busy.

In snow or storms, the road can be closed at short notice even in summer – check the status beforehand.

Combine the tour with the Jaufen Pass, which connects directly in St. Leonhard.
