WARUM DIESE ROUTE

Warum die Transfăgărășan?

The Transfăgărășan (DN7C) crosses the Făgăraș Mountains, the highest part of the Romanian Carpathians. From the north, it winds up in tight hairpins through a glacial cirque to Lake Bâlea at 2,042 metres, passes under the ridge in a tunnel and sweeps down into the valley along the Vidraru reservoir on the south side.

Built in the 1970s, it is now one of Europe's best-known pass roads – and with its striking line, it's made for a 3D relief.

    Bâlea Waterfall

On the north ramp, the Bâlea Waterfall plunges over a rock step into the valley. A short footpath leads up from the hotel at the hairpin – a good first stop.

The hairpins of the north ramp

The famous section: hairpin after hairpin, the road winds up through the glacial cirque. The view back down the valley is the Transfăgărășan's postcard shot.

Almost a kilometre through the mountain, loud and dark. At the south portal, the panorama opens up onto the quieter south side.

For around 30 kilometres the road follows the shore of the reservoir – winding, wooded and with much less traffic than in the north.

GUT ZU WISSEN

Praktische Infos.

Road & surface

Paved throughout. On the north side, many tight hairpins with an average gradient of just over 5%; on the south side, winding along the reservoir.

The tunnel under the ridge is almost a kilometre long and dark – lights on and keep your distance.

Tolls & fees

There are no tolls on the DN7C. Motorcycles also don't need a vignette (rovinieta) in Romania.

Fuel & breaks

There's no fuel station on the pass itself – fill up beforehand in the towns at the foot of the route.

Food and breaks: huts at Lake Bâlea and the hotel by the Bâlea waterfall.

Tips for the tour

Start early: from late morning, Lake Bâlea gets busy.

Even in midsummer it can be cold, windy and foggy at the top – pack a warm layer.

Opening depends on the snow. Check the current status shortly before your tour.
